Punjab govt to hold first round of talks with farmers on February 12

To develop a new agriculture strategy, the state government has formed an 11-member team of experts. In this regard, a notification has been issued.

On February 12, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) will host the first dialogue between the government and farmers. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann will spend time with the farmers there, listening to their problems.

On January 6, the government already convened a meeting to address the issue. On January 20, a second meeting to finalise the details would take place.

Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal stated today at a press conference at Punjab Bhavan that the new policy would be ready by March 31. He stated that ongoing efforts were being made by the government to ensure the welfare of farmers.

The chairman of the Punjab State Farmers and Farm Workers Commission, Sukhpal Singh, was on the committee, according to him. Other members included the vice chancellor of PAU in Ludhiana, Dr. SS Gosal, and the vice chancellor of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in Ludhiana, Dr. Inderjit Singh; economist Dr Sucha Singh Gill; former VC, Punjabi University, Patiala, Dr BS Ghumab; former Director (Horticulture) Dr Gurkanwal Singh; Adviser, Punjab Water Control and Development Authority Rajesh Vashisht; former Director (Agriculture) Balwinder Singh Sidhu; president, PAU Kisan Club, Amarinder Singh; and Chairman, PUNSEED, Mahinder Singh Sidhu.

The Agriculture Minister said the first government-farmer meeting would be held on February 12 at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann would attend it. He said over 2.500 progressive farmers from the state would participate in the meeting.

Dhaliwal also launched a portal and app for seed production, giving farmers online access. Farmers would be able to access internet information about the availability and variety of seeds, he said, through this.
