On November 16, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann initiated what is being heralded as the ‘biggest ever’ anti-drug cycle rally in the country. The rally, symbolically launched from the grounds of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, coincided with the martyrdom day of Kartar Singh Sarabha, a Ghadar leader hanged by the British at the age of 19 while fighting for India’s freedom.
Massive Youth Participation Against Drug Abuse:
A press release from the government reported a staggering participation of more than 25,000 youths in the rally, emphasizing its role as the “country’s largest cycle rally to break the backbone of drugs.”
Key Participants and Symbolic Inauguration:
Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav, Ludhiana police commissioner Mandeep Singh Sidhu, and PAU vice-chancellor Dr Satbir Singh Gosal shared the stage with CM Mann before the flagging-off ceremony. Mann, along with Yadav and Sidhu, actively participated in cycling, marking the commencement of the rally.
Unprecedented Scale for a Single Mission:
Organized by Ludhiana police in collaboration with the local administration, the rally aims to draw over 20,000 cyclists. Commissioner Sidhu emphasized its significance, stating, “It is the country’s biggest ever cycle rally to give a message against drugs. Such a huge gathering of cyclists for a single mission has never happened before.”
