Punjab News: In a recent show of defiance, supporters of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) took to the streets in Mohali and Delhi, protesting against the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The arrest, made by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the contentious excise policy case, has ignited tensions and spurred AAP members to stage demonstrations demanding his release.
AAP Protests Erupt Over Arvind Kejriwal’s Arrest Amid Excise Policy Probe
Mohali witnessed the use of water cannons by the police in an attempt to disperse AAP supporters who had gathered last night, expressing their solidarity with Kejriwal. Concurrently, in Delhi, heightened security measures were evident at the ITO area, where AAP workers began their protest. The capital saw an increased presence of paramilitary forces equipped with riot gear, aimed at managing the protest and maintaining order. Access to the AAP office was restricted, with blockades on all roads leading to the site, reflecting the authorities’ intent to prevent the escalation of demonstrations.
Kejriwal has decided to retract his Supreme Court petition challenging his arrest
In a strategic legal move, Kejriwal has decided to retract his Supreme Court petition challenging his arrest. Sources indicate that he now plans to seek redress from a lower court concerning his detention by the ED. This development followed after a 12-member team of the probe agency executed a search warrant at his official residence, marking the commencement of his custody.
The arrest has not deterred Kejriwal’s responsibilities as the Chief Minister, with AAP affirming that he will continue to serve in his role, even from behind bars. Atishi, a prominent AAP leader, asserted, “Arvind Kejriwal is and will remain the Chief Minister of Delhi… there are no two ways about it.” Despite being summoned by the ED on nine occasions in relation to the alleged money laundering case, Kejriwal had consistently contested the legality of these summons, choosing not to comply with them.
This dramatic series of events underscores the growing friction between the AAP and the central authorities, as the former champions its leadership and the latter pursues its investigation into alleged policy violations. The unfolding situation promises to keep the political climate in Delhi and beyond charged, as debates over governance, accountability, and political freedom intensify.
