Punjab News: Alarming Dip in Wheat Stocks Triggers National and Global Concerns

Punjab News: At the beginning of the month, India recorded a significant drop in wheat stocks, hitting 163.50 lakh tonnes. This marks the lowest level since 2017 when stocks had dwindled to 137.50 lakh tonnes. The Food Corporation of India (FCI) holds 23 lakh tonnes of wheat stock in Punjab, raising concerns at both national and international levels.

International Focus on Indian Wheat Production

As global demand for wheat rises, and with production remaining stagnant, the spotlight is on major wheat-producing states like Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. The Government of India and several international food agencies are closely monitoring the situation, recognizing the potential impact on global wheat markets.

Despite a delayed paddy harvest, Punjab, a major contributor to India’s wheat production, has exceeded its target of 32 lakh hectares for wheat cultivation during the ongoing Rabi Marketing Season. Although the wheat cultivation area is slightly less than the previous year, an increase in the area under mustard cultivation compensates for the difference.

Rigorous Monitoring Amidst Weather Risks

Punjab’s wheat cultivation area currently stands at 34.80 lakh hectares, marginally lower than last year’s 35.08 lakh hectares. The projected wheat production is anticipated to be slightly higher than the 164.75 lakh tonnes recorded last year, with a yield of 4,696 kg per hectare. However, the persistent cold and foggy weather pose a risk of yellow rust, prompting continuous engagement between agricultural authorities and farmers to safeguard the wheat crop.
