Punjab News: Amritsar Likely to Get US Consulate, Former Ambassador Sandhu Reveals Plans

Punjab news

Punjab News: Former Indian Ambassador to the United States, Dr. Taranjit Singh Sandhu recently unveiled a potential development: Amritsar might soon host a US consulate. This revelation emerged following Dr. Sandhu’s meeting with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, where discussions centered on the possibility of establishing an American consulate in the city.

Path to Diplomatic Presence

The journey towards a US consulate in Amritsar traces back to a decision made seven years ago, in 2016, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then US President Barack Obama. This decision was part of a reciprocal plan aimed at opening new consulates in both India and the USA. Dr. Sandhu, during his tenure as Ambassador, played a pivotal role in inaugurating the Indian consulate in Seattle, USA, in November 2023.

Anticipated Benefits for Amritsar

Dr. Sandhu highlighted the numerous advantages that would accompany the establishment of a US consulate in Amritsar. Primarily, it would simplify visa acquisition for residents of the border region and potentially facilitate the expansion of trade activities among businesses. The opening of the consulate aligns with efforts to bolster bilateral relations and enhance diplomatic ties between India and the USA.

Enhancing Connectivity and Trade Opportunities

In addition to discussing the consulate’s prospects, Dr. Sandhu deliberated on initiatives to improve connectivity and trade opportunities for Amritsar. He emphasized the significance of initiating cargo services from Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, which could catalyze economic growth in the region. Improved air connectivity, particularly with destinations like America, Canada, Europe, and Gulf countries, holds immense potential for fostering trade, tourism, and agricultural exports.
