Punjab News: In the aftermath of the July flashfloods that affected Punjab, the state government has made an announcement to provide compensation to farmers who suffered losses due to the damage to their paddy seedlings. Affected farmers will receive a compensation of Rs 6,800 per acre for their incurred losses.
Compensation to be given for the first-time ever
Typically, the loss of seedlings doesn’t fall within the scope of compensation as defined by the assistance norms established by the Government of India through the State Disaster Response Fund and the National Disaster Response Fund. Speaking to the media, Revenue Minister Brahm Shankar Jimpa stated, “It is for the first time that the Aam Aadmi Party government is giving compensation for the seedlings by declaring this as loss of inputs.”
Following the flashfloods that occurred between July 7-12, approximately 6.25 lakh acres of land experienced submergence of seedlings, with 2.75 lakh acres requiring replanting. KAP Sinha, the Financial Commissioner of Revenue, mentioned that they sought clarification from the central government regarding this matter, and they received permission to utilize disaster relief funds to provide compensation to farmers for the loss of seedlings.
Relief amount to be distributed soon
During the visit of the inter-ministerial Central team last month to assess the losses caused by the floods, the government had appealed for a twofold increase in compensation from the Disaster Response Fund to be provided to all those affected by the floods. However, there is no official update about that, as of now.
According to reports, a sum of Rs 103 crore has been distributed to different districts in response to the flashfloods that occurred in July. Additionally, an amount of Rs 186 crore has been allocated to the districts impacted by floods in August.
