Punjab News- Amid reports suggesting that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has scrapped some projects in Punjab, state Public Works Department Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO clarified that no such projects have been shelved. Instead, contractor agreements were terminated to prevent legal issues due to delays in land acquisition.
Clarification on Project Status
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Harbhajan Singh ETO stated, “No project of the NHAI has been scrapped in the state. The NHAI has only terminated pacts with contractors to avoid legal tangles and cost escalation, as the land is yet to be transferred by the Punjab government.” He assured that the remaining land will be handed over to contractors within two months, ensuring the continuity of development projects.
Progress on Land Acquisition
Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO provided details on the status of land acquisition for ongoing projects. Of the 1,150 km of highways under construction in Punjab, land for 975 km has already been transferred. Out of ₹17,325 crore given by the NHAI for land acquisition, ₹13,626 crore has been disbursed. The delays were primarily due to the prolonged election code of conduct.
Meeting with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari
During a meeting with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on July 16, the issue of land acquisition delays was discussed. Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO assured Gadkari that the necessary actions would be taken within the next two months. Gadkari, in turn, assured more NHAI projects for Punjab. Harbhajan Singh ETO emphasized the importance of these projects for the state’s growth and expressed readiness to make necessary adjustments to expedite land transfers.
Addressing Toll Plaza Shutdowns and Farmer Opposition
Harbhajan Singh ETO acknowledged delays in projects due to land acquisition issues in Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran, Jalandhar, and Ludhiana. He also mentioned ongoing efforts to resolve issues raised by the NHAI regarding the shutdown of toll plazas. Additionally, he addressed farmer unions’ opposition to land acquisition, stating that the state government is holding meetings with stakeholders to find solutions. He highlighted that the NHAI’s compensation formula is national and cannot be changed for Punjab alone.
Future Projects and Development
Harbhajan Singh ETO hinted at new road projects that Punjab is seeking from the NHAI, including those that will decongest GT Road (NH 44) and support military logistics. While exact locations were not disclosed due to ongoing land acquisition hurdles, he assured that Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann is committed to ensuring continuous and quality development in the state.
This decisive approach and the state government’s proactive measures reflect CM Bhagwant Mann’s commitment to Punjab’s infrastructure growth and economic development.
