Punjab News: Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann reiterated his opposition to sharing water with other states, particularly in reference to the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) issue. Following a cabinet meeting, Mann posted on social media that not a single drop of water would be shared with any other state.

The cabinet meeting also addressed concerns about groundwater depletion in Punjab

It was noted that 76.5% of blocks in Punjab (117 out of 153) are over-exploited, with groundwater extraction exceeding 100%. In contrast, Haryana has 61.5% of blocks (88 out of 143) that are over-exploited.

During a Northern Zonal Council meeting on September 26 in Amritsar, Chief Minister Mann emphasized to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar that Punjab does not have surplus water to share with Haryana. He called for a reassessment of water availability based on international norms and suggested that establishing a new tribunal with updated terms of reference and considering changed circumstances, including Yamuna waters, was the only solution to the long-standing water dispute.
