Punjab News: In a strong appeal to the 16th Finance Commission, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has sought a special package totaling ₹1,32,247 crore to accelerate the state’s development. Mann emphasized the significant contributions of Punjab in achieving national food self-sufficiency and preserving India’s independence, asserting that the state deserves a dedicated economic boost.
Details of the Requested Funds
The Chief Minister outlined the following allocation from the requested package:
- ₹75,000 crore for general development
- ₹17,950 crore for agricultural diversification
- ₹5,025 crore to tackle stubble burning
- ₹8,846 crore for combating narco-terrorism and drug abuse
- ₹6,000 crore for revitalizing the industrial sector
- ₹9,426 crore for urban local bodies
- ₹10,000 crore for rural local bodies
The Finance Commission team, which includes Chairman Dr. Arvind Panagariya and members Ajay Narayan Jha, Annie George Mathew, Dr. Manoj Panda, Dr. Soumyakanti Ghosh, and Secretary Ritvik Pandey, is currently visiting Punjab to assess the state’s needs.
Emphasizing Punjab’s Contributions
Chief Minister Mann highlighted Punjab’s pivotal role as the “food bowl of the country,” crediting the state’s hardworking farmers for making India self-reliant in food production. He also pointed out Punjab’s significant sacrifices during the freedom struggle and its ongoing contributions to national defense.
“We hope the Finance Commission will sympathetically consider our genuine demands and generously allocate the necessary funds to Punjab,” Mann stated, welcoming the Commission to the land of great Gurus, saints, seers, and martyrs.
A Vision for Punjab’s Growth
Mann expressed his vision for the package to drive economic growth and address key issues facing the state. He believes that the requested funds will not only support immediate needs but also lay the groundwork for sustainable development, enhancing the quality of life for Punjab’s citizens.
The appeal comes at a crucial time as the Finance Commission evaluates the fiscal needs of various states, with Punjab seeking to secure its fair share to ensure continued progress and prosperity.
