Rohit, aged 27, passed away at a hospital where he was receiving treatment for his injuries. The attack took place just outside the victims’ rented accommodation in Shalakadal, Shaheed Gunj area. Both carpenters had recently returned to the Valley and were targeted in the first militant attack on non-local residents in the region this year.

Militants have consistently targeted non-local workers in the Valley since the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in 2019. Last year, similar attacks resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to three others in different districts of the Valley. The recent incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in the region.
