Punjab News : Government Compensates Farmers for Flood-Related Crop Damage, Plans Solar Pump Installation

Punjab News: During a session at the Vidhan Sabha, Punjab’s Revenue, Rehabilitation, and Disaster Management Minister, Brahm Shankar Jimpa, revealed that a significant number of farmers—53,500 to be precise—received compensation for crop damage caused by floods last year. The compensation, totaling Rs 256 crore, was disbursed to farmers whose crops suffered losses amounting to Rs 15,000 or more.

Government Compensates Farmers for Flood-Related Crop Damage

Jimpa explained that in 2023, special girdawari orders were issued to all deputy commissioners in the state to assess crop losses due to floods. The assessment process commenced following an order issued on July 24 of the same year. Farmers affected by floods received compensation according to guidelines set by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The compensation amounted to Rs 6,800 per acre for up to five acres of crop loss.

Plans Solar Pump Installation

These statements came in response to queries raised by Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, the former Deputy Chief Minister and Congress MLA from Dera Baba Nanak.

In another development, the Punjab government announced plans to install 20,000 off-grid solar pumps in the fiscal year 2024-25 as a measure to replace diesel engines. Aman Arora, the Minister for New and Renewable Energy Sources, shared this information during the Vidhan Sabha session. The installation project will receive 30% subsidy each from the central and state governments, totaling 60% for general category farmers. Scheduled Caste category farmers will receive 30% subsidy from the central government and 50% subsidy from the Punjab government.
