Punjab News: Grounded & United: Punjab Police’s Unique Approach in the Battle Against Drugs

Recently, a meeting on the drug issue was held at Jhorar village, where police officers sat on the floor alongside villagers to discuss measures to tackle the drug menace.

Punjab News: In a groundbreaking initiative to combat the drug problem, the Muktsar district police, under the leadership of Malout DSP Pawanjit, have adopted a unique and humble approach. Recently, a meeting on the drug issue was held at Jhorar village, where police officers sat on the floor alongside villagers to discuss measures to tackle the drug menace.

Community Engagement at the Grassroots

Jhorar village, notorious for its drug issues and located 13 km from Malout town, has seen numerous cases registered under the NDPS Act. During the meeting, Malout DSP Pawanjit, along with the SHO and additional SHO of Malout Sadar police station, engaged with villagers on an equal footing, discussing ways to curb the drug problem and addressing other local concerns.

“This approach aims to make the public feel comfortable and friendly, encouraging them to share vital information and assist us in our duty,” said DSP Pawanjit. This method of engagement is part of a broader strategy to foster trust and cooperation between the police and the community.

In addition to village meetings, the police are conducting seminars in educational institutions and common village areas. Recently, Faridkot IGP Gursharan Singh Sandhu attended a program at the Red Cross Bhawan in Muktsar town, which saw participation from nearly 300 representatives of various organizations, sarpanches, and others.

Muktsar SSP Bhagirath Singh Meena highlighted the police’s achievements, noting that properties worth about Rs 3 crore belonging to drug smugglers have been frozen recently. “We are also motivating people who want to assist us in our ongoing war against drugs,” he said.

Reviving Anti-Drug Committees

The district is also seeing a revival of anti-drug committees, with police support. Ranjit Singh, founder member of the anti-drug committee of Gurusar village, emphasized the importance of this collaboration. “We have started reviving the anti-drug committees in the district, and the police are supporting us as of now,” he stated.

A Model for Drug-Free Punjab

Under the strong administration of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Punjab Police are determined to make the state drug-free. The grounded approach adopted by Muktsar police reflects the AAP government’s commitment to innovative and community-focused solutions in the fight against drugs.

This initiative demonstrates a significant step towards addressing the drug menace at the grassroots level, promoting unity and cooperation between law enforcement and the community.
