Punjab News: Opposition parties express concern over No guard of honour for Agniveer

Punjab news

Punjab News: Opposition parties expressed shock on Saturday as the Army did not provide a guard of honor during the last rites of Agniveer Amritpal Singh, who passed away in Jammu and Kashmir on October 11. The Army justified this decision, citing Singh’s self-inflicted gunshot injury as the cause of death, in line with their existing policy.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated that his government would strongly object to this matter with the Centre. He emphasized that regardless of the Army’s policy, his government would provide ₹1 crore to the soldier’s family as per the state policy, considering Amritpal Singh a martyr of the country.

Harsimrat Kaur Badal expressed shock

Amritpal Singh, serving with a battalion of Jammu and Kashmir Rifles in the Poonch sector, was cremated in his native village in Punjab’s Mansa district without an army guard of honor. Shiromani Akali Dal leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal expressed shock and called for Defense Minister Rajnath Singh’s intervention to ensure military honors for all martyred soldiers.

The Army, in a statement, confirmed the self-inflicted gunshot injury and revealed that a court of inquiry was underway to determine more details. Singh’s body was transported in a civil ambulance, and no guard of honor was provided due to the self-inflicted injury.

Concerns about treatment of Agniveer scheme-recruited soldiers

Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring raised concerns about the treatment of Agniveer scheme-recruited soldiers and questioned the lack of honors for this soldier.

Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal criticized the Bhagwant Mann government for not sending any state-level dignitary for the farewell of the young martyr.

SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia demanded the abolition of the Agniveer scheme and regularization of all soldiers recruited under it.
