Punjab News: In a bid to bolster the fight against online fraud, Punjab Police’s cybercrime division has called upon banks to designate dedicated nodal officers for the ‘1930 Cyber Helpline.’ This measure aims to facilitate swift actions, including priority blocking of bank accounts and timely sharing of details related to suspect accounts, as part of the concerted efforts to counter cyber financial crimes.
Streamlining Communication
During a meeting with representatives from major banks, ADGP Cybercrime V Neeraja stressed the importance of minimizing response times for complaints lodged on the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System (CFCFRMS) portal. The move seeks to streamline communication between law enforcement and financial institutions, fostering a more proactive approach to tackling cybercrimes.
Active Participation of Leading Banks
Representatives from prominent banks, including SBI, HDFC, ICICI, PNB, Axis Bank, RBL, Union Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Yes Bank, Indian Bank, and IDFC First Bank, participated in the meeting. The collaboration underscores the collective commitment to fortify cybersecurity measures and protect individuals from financial frauds.
Role of ‘1930 Cyber Helpline’
The ‘1930 Cyber Helpline’ empowers victims of cyber financial frauds to promptly freeze their funds in the accounts linked to the accused or suspects upon filing a complaint. ADGP Neeraja revealed that approximately Rs 20 crore had been frozen in suspects’ bank accounts through the helpline, with Rs 1.5 crore successfully refunded to victims with the assistance of the State Legal Services Authority, Punjab.
Promoting Awareness
The head of the cybercrime division urged banks to conduct awareness campaigns, encouraging the public to report fraud incidents through the ‘1930 Cyber Helpline.’ Additionally, she proposed displaying the helpline number prominently on flex boards or posters within and outside bank premises, along with active promotion on official bank websites. This multi-pronged approach aims to enhance vigilance and collaboration in combatting cybercrimes.
