Punjab News: Political Heat Over Farmers’ Agitation

Farmer Protest

Punjab News: The Punjab Vidhan Sabha’s budget session, commencing on Friday with the governor’s address, is set to become a battleground for political debates. The opposition, notably the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Congress, plans to capitalize on the platform to highlight critical issues such as the ongoing farmers’ agitation. The recent controversy surrounding the zero FIR for the tragic demise of 21-year-old farmer Shubhkaran Singh in Bathinda is expected to be a focal point of discussions.

Economic Concerns and Fiscal Scrutiny

As the session unfolds, the political landscape will intertwine with financial concerns, particularly the escalating debt under the AAP government. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema is slated to present the budget estimates for 2024-25 on March 5, providing the opposition an opportunity to scrutinize the fiscal policies of the state. The opposition has been vocal about the mounting debt, as recent estimates indicate plans to raise substantial funds, contributing to Punjab’s outstanding debt, projected to surge to Rs 3.47 lakh crore.

Pre-Lok Sabha Election Posturing

Given the proximity of the session to the Lok Sabha elections, political parties are strategically positioning themselves to address a spectrum of issues concerning the state. The AAP government has reiterated its support for the farmers’ demands, setting the stage for a dynamic and potentially contentious budget session.
