Punjab News: The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the names of five advocates for appointment as judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, deeming them suitable for the role. The recommended candidates include Harmeet Singh Grewal, Deepinder Singh Nalwa, Sumeet Goel, Sudeepti Sharma, and Kirti Singh.
While the Department of Justice raised concerns about the financial integrity of Deepinder Singh Nalwa, the Collegium, consisting of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice SK Kaul, and Justice Sanjiv Khanna, disregarded these objections, considering them vague and unsupported.
Punjab and Haryana HC currently operates with 56 judges
The Punjab and Haryana High Court currently operates with 56 judges, although its authorized strength is 85. Upon the final approval and notification of these five advocates’ appointments, the court’s working strength will increase to 61 judges.
The recommendation for the elevation of these advocates as judges was initially made by the Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice in consultation with the two senior-most colleagues, and the Chief Ministers and Governors of Punjab and Haryana concurred with the suggestion.
Recommendation in various High Courts:
Meanu, the Collegium has also recommended 15 advocates and judicial officers for elevation to various high courts, including Patna, Gauhati, Uttarakhand, and Madhya Pradesh. These recommendations encompass a diverse group of legal professionals and judicial officers.
