Punjab News: The Punjab and Haryana High Court issued sharp remarks directed at protesting farmers stationed at the Shambhu border with numerous tractors, emphasizing that tractor trailers should not be utilized on highways. The bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice GS Sandhawalia and Justice Lapita Banerji, also questioned the Punjab government’s decision to permit such large gatherings of farmers.

During the hearing of two public interest litigations (PILs), the bench highlighted concerns regarding the use of tractor-trailers on highways, citing the Motor Vehicle Act’s provisions. The court expressed astonishment that tractor-trailers are being operated on highways, stating that this practice is unique to the country. The bench suggested alternative modes of transportation, such as buses, for traveling to Delhi instead of using tractor-trailers.

The court’s remarks were made while dismissing an intervener application by lawyer SS Swaich, who argued against the use of lethal weapons by the state, resulting in injuries and vision loss for many individuals.
The PILs, filed by advocates Uday Pratap Singh and Arvind Seth, respectively, addressed various issues related to the ongoing protests. Singh’s PIL sought directions to lift restrictions imposed under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code and the suspension of mobile internet services and bulk SMS in several districts of Haryana. Seth’s PIL aimed to ensure that national and state highways, as well as railway tracks in Punjab and Haryana, remain unblocked by protesters, advocating for immediate action against those obstructing transportation routes.
