Punjab News: Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Announces Increased Monthly Allowance for Women, Funded by Savings from Agricultural Subsidy

Punjab News: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced on Tuesday that the state government will provide Rs 1,100 per month to all women in Punjab, an increase from the pre-poll promise of Rs 1,000 per month. This scheme will be funded through savings from the agricultural power subsidy.

Speaking at a public meeting in Dhuri while campaigning for AAP’s Sangrur candidate Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, CM Mann detailed the financial strategy for implementing the scheme. He emphasized that the plan would take effect soon after the Lok Sabha elections.

“I have already made calculations for the implementation of the scheme,” Mann stated. He explained that the state’s 18,000-crore agricultural power subsidy, currently used to run 14.5 lakh tube-wells, would be partially redirected. With the planned closure of 5 lakh tube-wells once canal water is supplied for irrigation, the state expects to save between Rs 6,000 and Rs 7,000 crore. This saving will cover the Rs 5,500 crore annual cost required for the monthly allowance scheme.

This allowance, aimed at every woman above 18 years of age, was one of AAP’s unfulfilled promises. The absence of a budget allocation for 2024-25 had led opposition parties to question the feasibility of the scheme. CM Mann’s announcement clarifies the funding mechanism, aiming to reassure the public and counter opposition skepticism.

The scheme is part of the AAP government’s broader commitment to women’s empowerment and financial independence, ensuring that the increased allowance supports the livelihood of women across Punjab.
