Punjab News: Punjab’s Health Minister, Dr. Balbir Singh, announced on Wednesday that the state has successfully made 865 villages tobacco-free, thanks to measures such as panchayat resolutions and the ban on hookah bars.
State Achieves Milestone through Panchayat Resolutions and Hookah Bar Ban
The announcement was made during the inauguration of a three-day national workshop focused on the implementation of the WHO-MPOWER initiative and the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) Article 5.3.
Dr. Balbir Singh highlighted that Punjab is the first state to establish an empowered committee dedicated to implementing WHO’s FCTC Article 5.3. Additionally, Punjab has declared e-cigarettes as an unapproved drug under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, reinforcing its commitment to tobacco control.
The minister emphasized the significance of these initiatives in improving public health and setting a precedent for other states to follow. The workshop aims to further the understanding and application of tobacco control measures as outlined by WHO, reinforcing Punjab’s leadership in the fight against tobacco use.
