Despite facing challenges such as two floods wreaking havoc during the paddy transplantation period, Punjab farmers have made a substantial contribution to the central pool, which procured an impressive 185.85 lakh metric tonnes of paddy. The paddy procurement season officially concluded today.
Punjab Farmers Make Significant Contribution to Central Paddy Pool Despite Challenges
The high paddy procurement, however, presents a new challenge in terms of storage capacity. Out of the available 167 lakh metric tonnes of storage space with the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and the state government, only 45 lakh metric tonnes are currently available for storing this year’s rice.
This season’s paddy production in Punjab reached 210 lakh metric tonnes, marking the highest production in the past five years. Farmers have retained over 25 lakh metric tonnes for personal use. The yield for the year remained high at 69.39 quintals per hectare, an increase of over 4 quintals compared to last year’s yield.
Despite the delayed harvest caused by rains in July and August, leading to damage and re-transplantation of seedlings, Punjab’s contribution to the central paddy pool has been a notable highlight in the overall foodgrain procurement this year. The extended paddy procurement season played a crucial role in accommodating the challenges faced by farmers.
