Punjab Recommissions 10MW Biomass Power Plant to Combat Pollution and Boost Employment
This cutting-edge facility will exclusively utilize 100% paddy straw to generate electricity, consuming an estimated 1 lakh tonnes of paddy straw annually. The recommissioning of the biomass plant is poised to address one of Punjab’s pressing environmental issues: stubble burning. By processing paddy straw, the plant will curb stubble burning across 50,000 acres, significantly reducing air pollution in the region.
Apart from its environmental benefits, the project is expected to have a substantial socio-economic impact
Apart from its environmental benefits, the project is expected to have a substantial socio-economic impact. It is anticipated to create between 400 to 500 jobs, contributing to local employment and economic growth.
The project is underpinned by a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), marking a long-term commitment to sustainable energy production in Punjab. This initiative underscores the state’s dedication to integrating renewable energy sources into its power grid, promoting a cleaner and greener future.
Power Minister Harbhajan Singh lauded the project’s recommissioning as a “significant step towards sustainable energy in Punjab,” highlighting its multifaceted benefits for the environment, economy, and public health. The successful revival of the Jalkheri Biomass Power Plant serves as a model for similar initiatives across the country, showcasing the potential of biomass energy in addressing both environmental and economic challenges.
