Punjab News: Punjab’s Water Conservation Minister, Chetan Singh Jauramajra, has appealed to the central government for the inclusion of the state in the ‘Atal Bhujal Yojana.’ Expressing concerns over the depleting groundwater levels in Punjab, the minister raised the issue during a discussion with Rajya Sabha member Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal at the Punjab civil secretariat. Jauramajra emphasized the need for concerted efforts to conserve groundwater and protect water resources from pollution.
Repeated Attempts and Unanswered Correspondence
During the discussion, Minister Jauramajra underscored his department’s persistent efforts to draw the attention of the central government to Punjab’s groundwater challenges. He highlighted the ongoing depletion of this crucial natural resource, stressing the urgency of addressing the issue. The minister pointed out that despite multiple attempts through correspondence, there had been no response from the Centre.
Accusation of Exclusion from Atal Bhujal Yojana
Jauramajra accused the central government of excluding Punjab from the ‘Atal Bhujal Yojana,’ a program designed to support states facing groundwater scarcity. He emphasized Punjab’s significant role in utilizing groundwater resources to contribute substantially to the national food stock. The minister called for the state’s inclusion in the scheme to enhance water conservation efforts and address the challenges posed by diminishing groundwater levels.
