Punjab News: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced the closure of two toll plazas located between Ludhiana and Barnala via Sudhar, Raikot, and Mahal Kalaan. These toll plazas, managed by a single company, have been a subject of contention due to demands for toll hike, which were rejected by the Punjab Government. The toll plazas, Pind Rakba near Mullanpur and Pind Mahal Kalaan, will cease operations on April 2 at midnight, marking a significant move by the state government.
Conflict Over Toll Rates:
While the Punjab Government decided to shut down the toll plazas, there have been recent increases in toll rates at other plazas in neighboring states. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) announced a hike in toll rates at four plazas in Haryana, including Gharaunda toll plaza in Karnal and Ghaggar plaza in Ambala. The fee revision, applicable from April 1, has stirred dissatisfaction among commuters, who perceive it as unjustified.
Commuter’s Concerns and NHAI’s Justification:
Despite NHAI’s explanation citing construction works and adherence to 2008 fee rules, commuters express discontent over the toll hike, especially considering the challenges faced during their journeys. Divyanshu Bhargawa, a Karnal resident, highlighted the burden imposed on travelers, particularly on routes with multiple toll plazas. The decision to close the toll plazas in Punjab adds to the ongoing debate surrounding toll rates and infrastructure development along national highways.
