Punjab News: The recent forecast of fairly widespread rainfall across Punjab until October 17 is a cause for concern among farmers who are yet to harvest their paddy crop or have it procured. This rain poses a risk of increasing the moisture content in the grains. The first spell of rain on Sunday morning, attributed to western disturbances, soaked some of the crop already dumped in the mandis for procurement. Further rainfall could prolong the harvesting process, which was already disrupted by the floods in July and August. Farmers are worried about the delay in procurement due to wet crops and lack of time for proper covering.
Delayed Monsoon in Maharashtra Leading to Foodgrain Production Drop
The delayed and inconsistent monsoon in Maharashtra has resulted in a predicted 22% drop in foodgrain production during the kharif season compared to the 5-year average. The most affected category is pulses, with an anticipated 35% reduction in production. Cereal production is expected to decrease by 18%, while oilseed production may drop by 8%. The delayed monsoon, along with excess rain in July and a subsequent dry spell in August, has negatively impacted crop production and productivity in the region.
Velim Villagers Demand Repairs for Rabi Crop Support
Villagers in Velim are urging the government to rebuild bandhs and sluice gates to support rabi crop cultivation. The village biodiversity committee has passed a resolution highlighting the need for repairing sluice gates to ensure adequate water storage for farmers. The lack of water availability and the threat of cattle have hindered farmers from engaging in a second crop. Restoring agriculture is crucial for preserving the area’s biodiversity, including migratory and indigenous birds. Velim MLA Cruz Silva has pledged to take steps to support agriculture in the constituency.
