Punjab panel to look into ‘false’ Vigilance cases

The strike of PCS officers in Punjab, which lasted for five days, ended on the third day itself. The officers have returned to work after receiving a warning from the Bhagwant Mann government. PCS officers were on mass leave from 9 to 14 January.

Earlier, a delegation of PCS officers had also met Venu Prasad, Additional Chief Secretary, Punjab Government.

In fact, recently the Vigilance Bureau had arrested PCS officer Narinder Singh Dhaliwal in a corruption case. PCS officers had termed this arrest as ‘illegal’ and had announced to go on a five-day mass leave against it.

But a strict warning was issued by the Punjab government that all the officers who remain on strike will be suspended. After this the PCS officers called off their strike and returned to work from 2 pm on Wednesday.

What is the whole matter?

On last Friday on January 6, the Vigilance Bureau had arrested Punjab Civil Service officer Narinder Singh Dhaliwal. Dhaliwal is accused of taking bribe. Dhaliwal was posted at RTO in Ludhiana.

The Vigilance Bureau had told that on November 18, a complaint was received against Dhaliwal on the CM helpline. When probed, it was revealed that Dhaliwal was taking bribe from transporters in Ludhiana in return for not deducting their challans.

The PCS Officers’ Association has termed Dhaliwal’s arrest as ‘illegal’. The association alleges that the Vigilance Bureau arrested Dhaliwal wrongly, illegally and arbitrarily without following the procedure.

The association demanded that the state government constitute a high-level committee to probe the ‘illegal’ arrest of Dhaliwal and submit its report by January 13.

The news agency quoted sources as saying that there was a discussion between the association and the government officials regarding their demands.

IAS officers are also angry?

The Vigilance Bureau had registered a case a few days ago against former minister Sundar Shyam Arora, IAS officer Neelima and 10 other government officials.

It is alleged that he transferred industrial plots to a real estate firm and in violation of the rules allowed the construction of township by cutting the plot.

What did the government say?

Aam Aadmi Party’s chief spokesperson Malvinder Singh Kang said that the Punjab government follows a zero-tolerance policy against corruption.

He said, honest officers need not fear, as the Chief Minister has already met their representatives and assured them of addressing their concerns. Kang said that bureaucrats should act as a responsible part of the government.
