Punjab: After a 12-year wait, four kids from a government school in Punjab’s Ferozepur district made the merit list of the state board exams. The delighted principal immediately granted their demand for air travel.
The Shaheed Gurdas Ram Memorial Government Senior Secondary School (Girls) principal Rakesh Sharma covers the costs of pupils’ plane travel out of his own cash. Sharma claimed that over the previous 12 years, the school’s 10th and 12th graders had not been selected for the Punjab School Education Board test merit list.
Sharma questioned the kids about their wishes, promising to grant them if they made the cut, in an effort to inspire them to work hard on their studies. The pupils asked for “jahaaz da jhoota” (air travel), and Sharma assured them that he would grant their request.
“I announced in a prayer meeting that if any student of 10th or 12th class secures merit positions in board exams, I will ensure air travel for any destination of their choice within the country,” he continued. The majority of the school’s students come from lower- and middle-class backgrounds.

Four students earned merit positions in the final exams
By God’s blessing, four students—two from the 10th class and two from the 12th class—earned merit positions in the final exams, said an overjoyed Sharma “Two twelfth-class students, Bhajanpreet Kaur and Simranjeet Kaur, went to Goa from Amritsar on a flight in November last year. Both of them attended the India International Innovation and Invention Expo (INEX-2022) in Goa,” according to Sharma.
Simranjeet’s father works as a truck mechanic, whereas Bhajanpreet’s father serves as a gurdwara’s “granthi” (priest). The school’s principal announced that two more pupils will now take a trip from Amritsar to Delhi in the final week of January. “They will be visiting the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Red Fort and other places in the national capital,” he said.

Students have now correlated the merit position with air travel
Sharma claimed that 22 additional pupils from classes 10 and 12 have already registered themselves for earning merit ranks after observing two students using the air travel opportunity. “The students asked me if all 22 secured merit positions, what will I do in that case? I told them I am committed to what I said. They will get ‘jahaaz da jhoota’,” said Sharma. According to him, “Students have now correlated the merit position with air travel.”
The principal of the school added that when he started working there in 2019, the school was ranked 48th out of 56 in the district. According to the principal, the school is currently ranked top in the Ferozepur district.
