This month, the Punjab Police will implement the “Sadak Surakhya Force,” a specialised traffic patrolling squad. The Punjab Police has already identified 1,500 men from the Punjab Armed Police (PAP) Battalion to be transferred to the new unit.
The force’s members will wear distinctive uniforms and receive specialist training. The government has started a new hiring initiative and bought specialised vehicles for patrolling.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has established a road map for the goal and wants the state to have a contemporary traffic patrolling team, according to ADGP (Traffic) AS Rai.
The fact that up to 12 valuable lives are lost in traffic accidents every day in the state justifies the need for the establishment of a specialised unit.
Punjab has so far had difficulty reducing road accident related deaths because there are only 2048 police officers assigned to the traffic division, or 6.5 officers for every 1 lakh residents of the state.
Alarmingly, 85% of fatalities take place inside a dangerous 6,000 km span that includes key district roads, state highways, and national highways. Due to a decreased traffic police presence between 6 pm and 12 am, nearly half of these accidents take place during this time.
New Isuzu SUVs for patrol and Mahindra Scorpio SUVs for highway high-speed interception will be provided for SSF personnel.
“SSF teams, each comprising three personnel in a rapid response vehicle, will be stationed 30 km apart and assigned specific areas for patrolling. We have identified the routes, highways, as well as patrolling sectors,” ADGP AS Rai said.
