Punjab: The Punjab government has proposed switching 20% of the coal in 2,500 brick kilns over to paddy straw briquettes as fuel as of May 1 in order to further reduce carbon emissions as a result of the significant decrease in crop residue burning events following paddy harvesting seen last year.
Positive externalities of stubble management highlighted by Punjab government
The state administration promoted the use of paddy straw briquettes as fuel for thermal power plants and the off-site management of crop leftovers with more compact biogas units. Even though there were fewer field fires last year—from 49,922 cases in 2022 to 71,304 incidences in 2021—the burned area barely changed.
Punjab allocates 350 crore rupees to help farmers manage crop stubble and increase production
Because 1.20 lakh agricultural residue management machines were in operation in Punjab, this might be doable. Positive externalities are produced by stubble management as well. The administration would keep coming up with fresh ideas. 350 crore rupees have been set aside under the sub-mission on agriculture mechanism to help farmers manage crop stubble and increase production.
