A young girl in Patiala tragically passed away after consuming a birthday cake ordered through the food delivery app Zomato. In response to this incident, Zomato took immediate action by delisting the restaurant from its platform and banning the owner from operating any future businesses on Zomato.
Zomato’s Swift Response
Zomato expressed deep sorrow and vowed full cooperation with law enforcement. “We are heartbroken and deeply shaken up by the recent tragic incident,” a Zomato spokesperson said according to Business Today. “As soon as we learned about it, we immediately delisted the restaurant and barred the owner.” The spokesperson further added, “We are extending our complete support to the law enforcement agencies in the matter.”
Police Investigation Underway
Following the incident, the police registered a case against the restaurant under sections 273 and 304A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). These sections deal with selling harmful food or drink and causing death by negligence, respectively.
Suspicious Restaurant Details
Adding to the complexity of the case, reports suggest discrepancies in the restaurant’s details. The bill copy from the order lacked a physical address for “Cake Kanha,” leading authorities to suspect it might be a cloud kitchen operating without a proper location. Furthermore, another receipt indicated billing from Amritsar, a different city altogether, raising concerns about the restaurant’s legitimacy.
