Punjab’s budget: Punjab’s Aam Aadmi Party administration on Friday unveiled its first comprehensive state budget, which chief minister Bhagwant Mann claimed will be in the interests of the general populace. “On this day a year ago, the people of Punjab gave us their approval in the election results. Our government will present its first full budget today “He described it as a “historic day” for Punjab in a tweet.
State Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema delivered the budget
State Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema delivered the budget and stated that the government places a priority on health and education. On the former, he said that the Mann government had so far produced 26,797 employment and that more than 10.5 lakh people had received medical care at the AAP’s “Aam Aadmi clinics” spread out throughout the western state.
The highlights of the Punjab budget for 2023–2024
- Health and education are two of the government’s top priorities, according to Harpal Cheema.
- The minister stated that 10.50 lakh patients have already received care in the state’s “Aam Aadmi Clinics” in the area of health.
- Cheema said that the Bhagwant Mann administration has so far provided 26,797 employment.
- During FY23/24, Punjab’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) is expected to reach $6.98 crore.
- Agriculture and related sectors have received a 20 percent increase in funding, bringing the total to 13,888 crore. According to the state finance minister, the administration will shortly release a new agriculture strategy for which a committee of specialists has been assembled.
- According to Cheema, the projected allocation for sports is 258 crore, or 55% more than FY 2022–23.
- Cheema suggested spending $17,072 crore on K-12 and higher education, a 12% increase from the previous year. The budget has set aside 20 crores for the most recent training of school principals.
- Health and family welfare would receive a financial allocation of Rs. 4,781 crore in FY 2023–24, an increase of 11% from 2022–23. (RE).
- A allocation of Rs. 10,523 crore has been set for police, which is 11% more than in FY 2022–23, to maintain peace & order (BE).
- Punjab government will spend 196462 crores this year, which shows a growth of 26%.
- 13888 crore given to agriculture sector which is 20% more than last year.
- The government gave a separate fund of 1 thousand crores for the purchase of basmati, 33% subsidy for cotton seeds and good quality seeds.
- 53 crore given to Patiala Sports University for infrastructure.
- Bill of 90% houses came to zero under free electricity scheme.
- 350 crores reserved for purchase of machine for stubble management.
