The BJP has filed a defamation case against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). BJP has filed a defamation case in the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Bengaluru. The special court directed to issue summons to all the defendants in this regard on Tuesday (June 13).
This court, which hears cases related to former and current MPs and MLAs, has taken cognizance under sections 499 (defamation) and 500 (punishment for defamation) of the IPC and has fixed July 27 as the date for hearing the case. BJP’s state secretary S Keshav Prasad filed this private complaint on May 9 alleging that BJP’s image was maligned by making false claims in advertisements.
What was said in the complaint?
According to the complaint, the KPCC published an advertisement in leading newspapers on May 5 ahead of the Karnataka assembly elections, claiming that the then BJP government in the state was involved in corruption and looted Rs 1.5 lakh crore in the last four years.
According to the complaint, the claims made by KPCC in the advertisement were completely baseless, prejudiced and defamatory.
After the court’s order, the BJP tweeted that it is easy to mislead people by speaking falsely and giving false advertisements. The BJP appreciated the court’s decision. The party said that now the court will give appropriate punishment in this case. Significantly, during the election campaign, the Congress had repeatedly accused the BJP of taking 40 per cent commission and doing corruption.
