Rahul Narwekar:Despite the political stability in Maharashtra, tensions are rising as the state’s political landscape continues to shift. The Mahayuti alliance, having returned to power with a strong mandate, is steadfastly pursuing its agenda. In the midst of this political activity, BJP leader Rahul Narwekar has been re-elected unopposed as the Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. However, his re-election has sparked uproar, with Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aditya Thackeray leading a boycott of the Assembly proceedings. This move by Shiv Sena has added fuel to the fire of ‘boycott politics,’ as both Shiv Sena and Congress continue to express their discontent with the current political climate.
Rahul Narwekar’s Unopposed Election as Maharashtra Assembly Speaker
Rahul Narwekar’s re-election as the Maharashtra Assembly Speaker is a significant political event. The BJP leader was elected unopposed, reflecting the strength of the ruling alliance. As Speaker, Narwekar plays an important role in ensuring the smooth functioning of the Assembly. However, his previous term did not sit well with opposition parties, including Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress, which have now raised their concerns again, leading to a strong response.
Aditya Thackeray’s Remarks on Rahul Narwekar and ‘Partition Politics’
Today, Shiv Sena (UBT) boycotted the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly proceedings. MLA Aditya Thackeray stated, "Shiv Sena (UBT) boycotted today's proceedings because of two things. Firstly, we had unopposed the Speaker's election yesterday respecting the custom and tradition. But when the name that came up was of Rahul Narwekar. In the last 2.5 years, he did partition politics, we need a guarantee that that injustice will not be repeated. The second thing is that if you look inside the House, they are trying to create an atmosphere of celebration. There is no celebration among the people, because the government is a government of EVMs. But today injustice is happening in Belgaum, injustice is being done to Marathi people, our demand is that the Prime Minister should make Belgaum a Union Territory."
Congress Supports Shiv Sena’s Boycott Politics
The political rift between Shiv Sena and the BJP has drawn in other parties as well. Congress has expressed its support for Shiv Sena’s boycott, signaling solidarity with the opposition party. This move highlights the growing divide between the opposition and the ruling alliance.
