Delhi News: Two renowned mosques in Delhi, the Babar Shah Takiya Mosque and the Bengali Market Mosque, have each received letters from the Northern Railway administration requesting the removal of encroachments within 15 days. The railway authorities have issued a warning that they will take the appropriate steps to regain their land if the encroachments are not removed within the allotted term.
Notification Warns of Legal Action Against Unapproved Structures
The railway administration has filed a notification claiming that their property has been unlawfully encroached upon and requesting that any parties who may have built unapproved structures such as temples, mosques, or shrines on their territory do so willingly. If the notice is not complied with, the railway administration will take legal action to reclaim the encroached land in accordance with the Railway Act.
Railways Shift Liability to Encroachers Amid Land Dispute
The notice also said that any losses incurred as a result of the process would be the responsibility of the parties who had encroached, absolving the railway administration of any responsibility. Abdul Gaffar, the secretary of the Babar Shah Takiya Mosque, asserted that the building is around 400 years old. Additionally, the railway officials have served a notice for the evacuation of the premises to the neighbouring Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for Malaria office.
Ancient Mosques Fuel Controversy Over Ownership Dispute
The ancient mosques have long played a significant role in Delhi’s religious and cultural scene. However, the railway’s assertion that it owns the land has sparked disagreements and disputes in the neighbourhood. The mosque committee contends that these places of worship retain considerable historical importance and have endured for centuries, in contrast to the railway authorities who claim that the structures were illegally erected on their property.
