Late on Tuesday night, a relative hiding in the 52-year-old woman’s home in the Talwandi area of the city’s Jawahar Nagar police station attacked her viciously with a sword. The woman was admitted to MBS hospital after being transported there from a private hospital, but there, according to authorities, physicians pronounced her dead.
Narendra Gautam, 48, a native of Sangod town in the Kota district, was apprehended by police from the crime site where other family members and neighbours had grabbed hold of him.
Following a postmortem performed under the supervision of a medical board later in the day, the deceased woman, identified as Bhawana Sharma (Gautam), was identified and her body was given to family members.
The accused was a relative of the woman who was killed, said to DSP Amar Singh, the circle officer for the Jawahar Nagar area. Until recently, the accused had been a frequent visitor to the woman’s home, where she lived with her two children and a husband who had a brain tumour and had been bedridden for a while.
The woman had begged the accused to cease going to her house; she ran a pharmacy in the same area. The DSP claimed that despite this, he persisted and would allegedly spend hours sitting in a public garden in front of her home.
When the woman arrived at the house on Tuesday night at 11.30 p.m., the accused man—who was carrying a sword—was hidden inside. She fought back against the attack, and he repeatedly slashed at her, according to the DSP. The daughter was hurt while trying to save her mother, he continued.
The police official added that although the culprit had a wife and children in Sangod town, it appeared that he was after Bhawana Sharma and was enraged by her unwillingness to meet with him.
