The woman, who is a mother of two, was critically injured in the attack and sustained burn injuries ranging from 40 to 50 percent of her body part. She was initially admitted to a government hospital in Balmora before being sent on to a more advanced medical facility in Jodhpur, according to the officials.
According to police officials, the woman’s villager was the accused Shakur Khan.
According to officials, the accused broke into the house on Thursday while the victim was home alone and raped her.
When the woman’s neighbours arrived at the scene after hearing her scream, the accused set the woman on fire and escaped from the scene, according to officials with knowledge of the situation who requested anonymity.
“The incident took place on Thursday evening. The accused is currently absconding and police are searching for him,” Nitesh Arya, Barmer’s additional superintendent of police said.
According to officials with information the situation, police have filed a case under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 376 (punishment for rape), 326 (voluntarily causing grievous harm with dangerous weapons or methods), 450 (house trespass in order to commit an offence punishable by life in prison), and other sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
According to the police, the victim was not in a condition to speak, thus her statement could not be recorded.
