Jaipur News – In a significant move towards tackling air pollution, the Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board launched Jaipur’s first-of-its-kind early warning and decision support system for air quality management on Wednesday. The launch coincided with World Environment Day and was inaugurated by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma at a state-level event in Jaipur.
Jaipur Introduces Early Warning and Decision Support System for Air Quality Management
This innovative system is designed to provide advance notifications of air pollution episodes up to five days in advance. It also offers a daily breakdown of the primary contributors to particulate matter (PM) pollution, enabling both the public and government authorities to take proactive measures to mitigate air quality issues.
Developed by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the system has already demonstrated success in Delhi. It operates on a dual-domain model, with the outer domain covering the entire Indian subcontinent at a horizontal grid spacing of 10 km. The output is then dynamically downscaled to a finer resolution of 2 km for Jaipur and its surrounding areas, ensuring precise and localized air quality forecasts.
Chief Minister Sharma emphasized the importance of this system in improving public health, stating, “With timely information on air pollution levels and their sources, we can implement strategies to reduce exposure and safeguard the health of our citizens. Improved air quality can significantly decrease the risks of mortality and morbidity associated with acute air pollution exposure.”
The introduction of this early warning system marks a pivotal step in Jaipur’s efforts to combat air pollution. By making the public aware of expected pollution levels and providing the government with actionable data, the system aims to foster a healthier environment and enhance the overall quality of life in the city.
As the system begins its operation, Jaipur joins a growing list of cities committed to utilizing advanced technology for environmental management and public health protection.
