Lok Sabha Election 2024: In a progressive move, Rajasthan has introduced a novel voting system allowing citizens aged 85 and above, as well as those with over 40% disability, to cast their votes from the comfort of their homes during the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Eligible voters can now register for this facility through booth-level officials (BLOs), with the registration process set to continue until March 26th, coinciding with the first phase of polling.
Successful Implementation in Previous Elections
Chief Election Officer Praveen Gupta highlighted the successful implementation of a similar initiative during the 2023 state assembly elections. At that time, the provision was extended to senior citizens aged 80 and above and individuals with disabilities, resulting in nearly 99% of the registered voters opting for home voting out of a total of 61,022 eligible individuals. Building upon this success, the scope of the facility has been expanded for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Flexible and Convenient Option
Gupta emphasized that home voting remains an optional measure. BLOs will update the list of eligible domestic voters for respective Lok Sabha constituencies until the finalization of candidate names. Following this, eligible voters will be facilitated with postal ballots for home voting. To avail of this convenience, eligible voters must apply to BLOs through Form 12-D.
Timelines and Procedures
After the registration of voters opting for home voting, their lists will be made available to all recognized political parties and candidates by April 1st. Special polling teams will be formed, trained, and all necessary procedures will be completed by April 4th.
This innovative measure aims to enhance the inclusivity and accessibility of the electoral process, ensuring that every eligible citizen has the opportunity to exercise their right to vote without any hindrances.
