Rajasthan adds 676MW wind energy in FY23

The sandy wind of the desert which was once the cause of the storm is now generating electricity. After nuclear, thermal and solar energy, Rajasthan is also moving fast in the field of wind energy.

In 2022-23, projects worth 676 MW came up, taking the total capacity in Rajasthan to 5200 MW. Now Rajasthan has added maximum wind power capacity in the country last year.

There is a possibility of 8000 MW wind power generation in Rajasthan by 2025. Jaisalmer has the maximum number of wind power plants in Rajasthan. Jaisalmer is producing 95% of Rajasthan’s wind energy. Most of the wind power plants have been set up by the private sector.

State’s first private sector wind power project was established in 2001

The state’s first private sector wind power project was established in 2001 at Bada Bagh in Jaisalmer. After this, Rajasthan became the hub of wind energy. In the year 2009, after Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka, Rajasthan was at number five in terms of wind energy production.

DV Giri, secretary general, Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA) said, “The industry has invested Rs 25,000 crore to create 15 GW annual manufacturing capacity with 70 to 80% localization. Solar-wind hybrid and storage will be key to achieving the country’s renewable energy targets. Hybrid plants leverage resources including land, which is a critical economic component. Secondly, with only solar plants, there is the issue of grid instability as they stop generating power in several circumstances. That’s where wind comes in, as the plants can function at any time of the day or night.”
