Rajasthan Assembly Election 2023: The ruling Congress party has released its initial list of candidates for the high-stakes Assembly elections in Rajasthan. This list includes Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and his former deputy, Sachin Pilot, who will be contesting from their current Assembly seats of Sardarpura and Tonk, respectively. The party has named a total of 33 candidates in this first list, amidst speculation about internal struggles over ticket allocation.

Other notable names in the list comprise Congress’ Rajasthan unit chief Govind Singh Dotsara, former state cabinet minister Harish Chaudhary, and Assembly Speaker CP Joshi, all contesting from their respective seats. Rajasthan is set to hold the single-phase election on November 25, with the counting of votes scheduled for December 3.
Previous election:
In the previous 2018 Assembly elections, the Congress secured 100 out of the 200 seats and formed the government with the support of smaller parties and independent candidates, making Ashok Gehlot the chief minister for the third time.
The BJP, which had ruled from 2013 to 2018, was reduced to 73 seats. Rajasthan has exhibited a pattern of changing governments every five years over the past couple of decades, with the BJP and Congress alternating in power due to the anti-incumbency factor.
