In July, Rajasthan registered the highest retail inflation rate of 9.7%, according to data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO). Following closely was Jharkhand with an inflation rate of 9.2%. The official data, disclosed on Monday, indicated that consumer price inflation (CPI), a measure of retail inflation, surged to a 15-month peak of 7.4% in July, up from 4.9% in June. This jump was primarily attributed to elevated prices of vegetables and cereals, raising concerns about the overall price scenario.
Rajasthan followed by Jharkhand records highest retail inflation
The persistently high retail inflation has become a significant policy challenge in the run-up to the upcoming national elections next year, as well as key state elections later this year. Among the data for various states, it was evident that out of the 22 states, approximately 14 had inflation rates ranging from 7% and above. Only Delhi, Assam, Jammu & Kashmir, and West Bengal managed to keep their inflation rates below 6%.
Data indicated that rural areas experienced higher inflation at 7.6%, while urban areas witnessed slightly lower inflation at 7.2%
A deeper analysis of the state-specific data revealed that Jharkhand had the highest inflation rate for rural areas, standing at 9.9%. This was followed by Telangana at 9.7%, Haryana at 9.5%, Tamil Nadu at 9.4%, and Rajasthan at 9.3%. For urban areas, Uttarakhand recorded the highest inflation rate at a double-digit figure of 10.5%, trailed by Rajasthan at 10.4% and Odisha at 9.9%. In contrast, states such as Delhi maintained a relatively low inflation rate of 3.7%, along with Assam at 3.9% and Jammu & Kashmir at 5%.
