The Rajasthan government will provide drones on rent to the low-income farmers of the state to help them in spraying fertilizers and pesticides. These drones will provide farmers with the facility of spraying chemicals in a large agricultural area in less time and limited cost, as well as monitoring the crops. The state government will make available around 1,500 drones at ‘custom hiring centres’ in the next two years. Modern agriculture useful machines are given on rent at ‘Custom Hiring Center’. Principal Secretary, Department of Agriculture and Horticulture, Dinesh Kumar said, “The use of artificial intelligence (AI) and drones is increasing worldwide for agricultural work. In Rajasthan too, the government is promoting the use of technology so that farmers can increase their income and yield.”

He said, “Progressive farmers of the state have already started using drones in farming. In the coming times, there will be a huge increase in the demand and utility of drones in the agriculture sector. In view of this, the government has decided to provide drones on rent to those farmers, whose income is limited and who cannot buy advanced and expensive drones. It may be known that in traditional agricultural practices, pesticides are sprayed either by hand or with the help of a ‘sprayer’ mounted on a tractor. Sprayer requires a large amount of insecticide and water. Not only this, a large part of the ‘spray’ (pesticide dissolved in water) is wasted during spraying.
However, drone-based sprays require less water and pesticides due to better application and bio-efficiency. Another official said that 70 to 80 percent water can be saved by spraying drones as compared to conventional sprinkling. Agriculture Commissioner Kanaram said, “With the help of drones, the deficiency of nutrients in the standing crop can be easily detected.” He said that irrigation monitoring, crop health monitoring, pest analysis, crop damage assessment, locust control, chemical spraying are such tasks, which can be done better through drones. To show the utility of drones in agriculture by the Department of Agriculture, a live demonstration of state-level drone technology was done in Joshiwas village of Jobner last Wednesday.

Agriculture expert Shivpal Singh Rajawat said that it is important and necessary to update the current agricultural practices to increase the yield. Hemraj Sharma, a farmer from Jaipur, says, “Traditionally, crops are monitored through human monitoring. On the other hand, spraying of pesticides is done either by hand or by a sprayer mounted on the tractor. With the use of drones, both these works can be done more effectively in less time. Seeing the usefulness of drones, I am also considering to use them in my farm.”
