BJP Faces Setback as Congress Wins Karanpur Assembly Seat in Rajasthan
Congress candidate Rupinder Singh Kooner secured victory over the BJP’s Surenderpal Singh by a margin exceeding 12,000 votes. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, in a post on X, congratulated Kooner and dedicated the win to the public service contributions of his father and MLA Gurmeet Singh Kooner. Gurmeet Singh Kooner’s demise during the Assembly elections last November had led to the postponement of the election in Karanpur.
Gehlot commented on the people of Karanpur defeating the pride of the BJP, emphasizing that the public had delivered a lesson to the BJP for violating the code of conduct and morality by appointing its candidate as a minister during the elections.
The Congress had raised objections with the Election Commission, accusing the BJP of attempting to manipulate voters by appointing Singh as a minister even before he officially became an MLA. Following the BJP’s victory in the Assembly polls, Singh assumed the role of Minister of State (independent charge) and received four portfolios, including Indira Gandhi Nahar and the Department of Minority Affairs and Waqf.
