Rajasthan News: Chandipura Virus Suspected in Rajasthan: Four Child Deaths and New Cases Reported

Officials have also reported two new suspected cases, heightening concerns in the region.

Rajasthan News– The state health department of Rajasthan has been put on high alert following the deaths of four children in Dungarpur district due to suspected cases of the Chandipura virus. Officials have also reported two new suspected cases, heightening concerns in the region.

Recent Developments

In the last two weeks, four children from Dungarpur district have died from what is suspected to be the Chandipura virus. The victims, aged between two and fourteen years, exhibited symptoms including vomiting and diarrhoea. A child from Kalyanpur village in the neighboring Udaipur district also succumbed to similar symptoms. Due to the lack of sample testing, the exact cause of death remains unconfirmed.

Two more children have been admitted to the government hospital in Dungarpur with suspected cases of the Chandipura virus. The affected children, a four-year-old girl from Ramsor Bagdi village and a three-year-old boy from Baldiya village, were hospitalized on July 10 after showing symptoms consistent with the virus.

Health Department Response

Dr. Alankar Gupta, the chief medical health officer of Dungarpur, announced that a team of doctors and nurses has been dispatched to Ramsor and Baldiya villages. “The team will conduct door-to-door examinations of children. Any child showing symptoms such as fever, vomiting, or diarrhoea will be promptly admitted to the hospital,” said Dr. Gupta.

Dr. Nilesh Gothi, head of the paediatrics ward at Dungarpur Hospital, confirmed that samples from the two newly admitted children have been sent for testing. “The samples were initially sent to Udaipur and have since been forwarded to the National Institute of Virology in Pune. The lab results will confirm if these cases are indeed due to the Chandipura virus,” stated Dr. Gothi. He added that the current condition of the two children is stable.

Background

The Chandipura virus, transmitted through sandfly bites, is known to cause symptoms such as high fever, vomiting, and diarrhoea, and can lead to encephalitis, a severe brain infection. The virus poses a significant risk to children, with a high mortality rate if not treated promptly.

Moving Forward

The state health department is closely monitoring the situation and is prepared to take additional measures to prevent the spread of the virus. The public is advised to remain vigilant and report any symptoms immediately to health authorities.

The confirmation of the virus through laboratory tests is awaited, and the health department will continue its efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of the community.
