Rajasthan News: In a significant move, more than 500 tractors are set to converge on Jaipur from Ajmer on March 11, as part of a farmers’ agitation led by the national president of Kisan Mahapanchayat, Rampal Jat. The protest is rooted in the demand for a law ensuring the purchase of agricultural produce at Minimum Support Price (MSP).
Farmers Tractor Rally to Jaipur in Protest for MSP
A formal request has been submitted to the Jaipur Police Commissioner, seeking permission for a tractor march on March 11, amplifying the farmers’ call for legislative action. Additionally, a statewide 11-day awareness campaign is slated to be organized by the Kisan Mahapanchayat.
Rampal Jat, expressing the intensity of the movement, warned, “If the chief minister does not promise to enact a law for purchasing agricultural produce at MSP, we will march to Delhi.” Farmers from Ajmer, Dudu, and Jaipur districts are expected to join the rally with their tractors.
A Show of Strength by Kisan Mahapanchayat
In a bid to amplify their demands, Jat stated, “If the government tries to crush our movement in a dictatorial manner, a bandh will be called in 45,000 villages of Rajasthan.” The protest strategy includes farmers remaining in their villages unless absolutely necessary, and those requiring essential items like grains, milk, and vegetables must come to the village to collect them.
The central demand of the farmers revolves around the insistence on the Centre implementing a law guaranteeing the purchase of agricultural produce at MSP. Simultaneously, they are urging the state government to either pass the Agricultural Produce and Livestock Marketing (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2018, or amend the existing Agricultural Produce Market Act, 1961, and Agricultural Produce Market Rules, 1963.
Adding to their grievances, Rajasthan farmers expressed concerns over the MoU signed with the Madhya Pradesh government for the PKC-ERCP Link Project. Farmer leader Himmat Singh highlighted discrepancies, stating, “After the MoU, its expenditure was said to be Rs 58,000 crore, but it has come down to Rs 45,000 crore. The government should provide farmers with clarity on this matter.” The protest not only reflects the farmers’ determination for MSP guarantees but also underscores broader concerns about water supply projects affecting the agrarian landscape.
