Punjab

Rajasthan News: In another unfortunate incident in Kota, an 18-year-old student preparing for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) was found dead on Monday, marking the second suicide case in less than a week. The Rajasthan coaching hub has been grappling with a concerning rise in such incidents. Last year recorded the highest number of suicides in Kota since 2015.

Background and Note Suggesting Academic Stress

The victim, residing with her family, was set to appear for the JEE soon. According to the police, a note recovered from her room indicates that academic stress was a significant factor contributing to the tragedy. The student was the eldest of three sisters, and her father works as a security guard at a private bank in Kota.

Alarming Suicides in Kota and Preventive Measures

Kota witnessed 15 suicides in 2022, the highest since 2015. Concerns over the mental health of students preparing for competitive exams have prompted a committee to recommend preventive measures. The committee suggested conducting fun activities, uploading motivational videos online, and considering syllabus reduction to alleviate pressure on students.

Impact of COVID-19 on Suicides and Kota’s Test-Prep Industry

The years 2020 and 2021 reported no suicides, as coaching institutes adapted to online modes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the resumption of in-person coaching has coincided with a distressing increase in such incidents. The Kota test-prep industry, valued at ₹10,000 crores annually, attracts students from across the country after completing Class 10.
