The Rajasthan state government has put forward a proposal to designate five wetlands in the state for the prestigious Ramsar site status. The proposal, currently under review by the Union environment ministry, includes the Khinchan bird sanctuary in Jodhpur, Chandlai in Jaipur, Kanwas Pakshi Vihar in Kota, Lunkaransar in Bikaner, and Menar Lake in Udaipur district.
To enhance their ecological value, measures are being implemented, such as stopping industrial effluent discharge and preventing encroachments. The wetlands, strategically located in the Central Asian Flyway, are crucial for migratory birds during the winter months.
Conservation Efforts and Pollution Control
The state pollution control board has collaborated with authorities to shut down industries releasing effluents into Chandlai Lake in Jaipur, demonstrating a commitment to water quality preservation. The initiative aims to maintain the environmental integrity of these wetlands, vital for sustaining diverse ecosystems. Shikhar Agrawal, additional chief secretary for the forest, environment, and climate change department, expressed optimism about Rajasthan’s potential for an expanded presence on the Ramsar map, reflecting its commitment to wetland conservation.
