In a shocking incident on Thursday evening, three sadhus from Uttar Pradesh en route to the Gangasagar Mela in West Bengal were brutally beaten by a mob in Purulia district. The sadhus, a father and his two sons, had hired a vehicle for their journey to participate in the Makar Sankranti festival.
Misunderstanding Leads to Mob Violence
The unfortunate incident unfolded when the sadhus sought directions from three teenage girls regarding their route. The girls, feeling scared, screamed and fled the scene, triggering suspicion among the locals, who subsequently apprehended and assaulted the sadhus. A video from the incident also captured the mob vandalizing a police vehicle.
Police Intervention and Investigations
As tensions escalated, local police intervened promptly, rescuing the sadhus and taking them to the Kasipur Police Station. Abhijit Banerjee, Purulia Police Superintendent, confirmed that a case had been registered, and investigations were underway. Raids were being conducted to apprehend those involved in the assault.
Police Clarification on Sadhus Intentions
The police clarified that the sadhus had merely lost their way and had stopped to confirm directions with the girls. However, the girls reaction led locals to assume harassment, resulting in the unfortunate attack on the sadhus.
Political Response and Condemnation
The West Bengal BJP condemned the incident and criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her perceived silence. In a statement, the party expressed dismay, demanding accountability and questioning the lack of acknowledgment for the Hindu sadhus who fell victim to the violence.
Transport Arranged for Sadhus to Gangasagar Mela
Despite the harrowing experience, arrangements were later made for the sadhus to continue their journey to the Gangasagar Mela, ensuring their participation in the Makar Sankranti festival.
