Snowless Winter in Kashmir Raises Concerns Beyond Tourism and Sports, Check

Kashmir Snowfall

In a surprising turn of events, Kashmir‘s usual snowy winter scenes are missing this year. The absence of snow not only disappoints tourists and winter sports enthusiasts but also has broader implications that go beyond just fun and games.

Impact on Fun and Games

Without the usual snowfall, popular places like Srinagar, Sonmarg, and Gulmarg are missing the fun of snowball fights and sledding. This is causing problems for tourism, and there’s even talk about postponing the Khelo India Winter Games, a major winter sports event.

Long-term Worries for Water Resources

“The head of the Indian Meteorological Department in Srinagar, Mukhtar Ahmad, expressed concern to India Today, stating that he is worried about the upcoming summer. He anticipates challenges due to insufficient water to nourish rivers reliant on melting snow. Additionally, the shortage of snow may accelerate glacier melting, posing environmental concerns.”

Weather Anomalies and Predictions

The weather department reports that Kashmir had almost 80% less rainfall than usual in December 2023. The reason behind the missing snow could be a climatic event called El Nino and the absence of a strong western disturbance. These factors are affecting the weather patterns in the region.

Immediate Issues for Tourism and Sports

The missing snow is causing real problems now. In Gulmarg, a popular tourist spot, there’s been a 70% drop in visitors, leading to canceled hotel bookings and disrupted winter sports activities. Local businesses that invested in these activities are facing financial challenges.

Environmental Impact and Climate Change

Beyond the immediate issues, experts are worried about the faster melting of glaciers. If this keeps happening, it could affect the water cycle and lead to rivers drying up. While it’s too early to blame this entirely on climate change, experts say we need to keep an eye on these changing weather patterns.
