Renowned climate activist Sonam Wangchuk concluded his 21-day hunger strike on Tuesday, advocating for Ladakh’s statehood and the preservation of the delicate Himalayan environment. Despite ending his strike, Wangchuk emphasized that this was merely the conclusion of phase 1, as women protesters would now undertake a ‘climate fast’ beginning tomorrow.
The Continuation of the Movement
Wangchuk made it clear to his supporters that while he was ending his hunger strike, the movement itself would persist. He announced that women protesters would carry forward the cause with their own fast, determined to continue until their demands were met.
Plea to Prime Minister Modi
Hours before ending his hunger strike, Wangchuk issued a fresh appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to fulfill the promises made to the people of Ladakh. Referencing Modi’s devotion to Lord Ram and the principle of ‘pran jaye par vachan na jaye’ (one may lose their life, but must not break their promise).
Power of Citizens and Election Reminder
Highlighting the power of citizens in a democratic nation like India, Wangchuk stressed the importance of using the ballot wisely. He emphasized that citizens have the ability to influence change and urged them to wield this power carefully in the upcoming elections for the betterment of the nation.
Background and Demands
Climate Fast Initiation
Sonam Wangchuk, known for his advocacy in education reform, had been undertaking a ‘climate fast’ in Leh since March 6 amidst sub-zero temperatures. The protest aimed to draw attention to the deadlock in discussions regarding Ladakh’s statehood and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule.
Joint Agitation Efforts
The agitation for Ladakh’s rights is being jointly led by the Leh-based Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA). Together, they are championing the demands for statehood and Sixth Schedule inclusion.
Citizen Participation and Government Response
Wangchuk highlighted the significant participation of around 60,000 residents out of Ladakh’s population of 3 lakh in the hunger strike. However, he expressed disappointment in the lack of response from the government despite the demonstrators’ efforts.
Preservation of Himalayan Ecosystem and Indigenous Cultures
The primary objective of the movement is to draw attention to the fragile ecosystem of the Himalayan mountains in Ladakh and the preservation of its unique indigenous tribal cultures. Wangchuk and other activists aim to awaken the consciousness of Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to safeguard these vital aspects of Ladakh’s identity.
