Muslim community demands representation in Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister position and Cabinet
‘We had said before the elections that the deputy CM should be a Muslim and that we should be given 30 seats (Muslim candidates),’ Waqf Board Chairman Shafi Saadi remarked. He added that, ‘ There are now 15 of us, and 9 of them are Muslim. Only because of Muslims did the Congress win in 72 assemblies. We have given the Congress a lot as a community. The time has arrived for us to receive something in exchange. We want five ministers with solid responsibilities like home, revenue, and health, as well as a Muslim deputy chief minister. The Congress must give us this as a token of appreciation. To put it into action, we had an urgent meeting with the Sunni Ulema Board.’
Congress struggles to select new chief minister in Karnataka amidst demands for Muslim representation
Congress has not yet been able to choose the new chief minister of Karnataka. Kharge must now make a decision regarding the CM’s name. To become the chief minister, Siddaramaiah and Karnataka State Congress President DK Shivakumar are engaged in a bitter contest. Shafi stated that ‘it is up to the Congress to decide who of these 9 individuals (the successful Muslim candidates) should be awarded this position. Congress will need to determine who has done good work and who makes a strong candidate,’ he said. In order to promote unity between Hindus and Muslims, several Muslim candidates also travelled to other areas and ran campaigns there. He sometimes neglected his supporters. They therefore played a significant part in Congress’ victory. He ought to have a superb Muslim deputy chief minister. They are in charge of it.’ Come on Saturday, the Congress will have a resounding victory in the Karnataka legislature with 135 seats. JDS received only 19 seats, compared to 66 for the BJP.
